11 Kenyan university students die in road accident

Tragedy struck as a bus transporting students from a prominent Kenyan university met with a devastating collision with a truck amid treacherous weather conditions.

The incident, which occurred at 5:50 pm on Monday, March 18, at Maungu, approximately 360 kilometers away from Nairobi, claimed the lives of 11 students while leaving 42 others with serious injuries, according to authorities.

The group of students, hailing from Kenyatta University, was en route to the coastal city of Mombasa when the accident transpired.

The collision resulted in ten immediate fatalities, with another succumbing to injuries later in the hospital.

The police report revealed that the university bus, attempting to overtake a line of vehicles amidst heavy rainfall, lost control and veered to the right side of the road.

In a bid to avoid a head-on collision, the truck swerved, ultimately colliding with the left side of the university bus. With 58 individuals aboard, the bus was on an academic excursion when the tragedy unfolded.

The injured victims were promptly transported to a hospital in Voi, as reported by the Kenyan Red Cross via social media platforms.

In response to the heartbreaking incident, Kenyatta University expressed profound sorrow and announced the establishment of a support center at its main campus to extend assistance during this trying period.

Additionally, the university disclosed that some of the injured students were being evaluated for potential evacuation to Nairobi, highlighting the gravity of the situation and the urgency in providing necessary care and support to those affected.
