The individual responsible for the tragic knife attack that claimed the lives of six people at a shopping center in Australia has been identified as 40-year-old Joel Cauchi.

Cauchi had relocated to Sydney merely a month before the incident occurred at the Westfield mall in Bondi Junction, situated in the eastern part of the city.

Authorities became aware of Cauchi’s involvement when his family recognized him in footage of the attack broadcasted on television.

Originating from Queensland, Cauchi was known to law enforcement, although he had not faced arrest or charges prior to the assault on Saturday, April 13.

On Sunday, April 14, New South Wales police confirmed Cauchi’s identity after he was fatally shot by a police officer.

Acting alone, Cauchi targeted shoppers on a Saturday afternoon, with authorities stating that they do not suspect terrorism as the motive behind the attack.

Tragically, among the victims were four women, a man in his 30s, and a security guard at the shopping center.

One of the victims, Dr. Ashlee Good, a mother, reportedly entrusted her nine-month-old baby to a stranger in a desperate attempt to save the child after being stabbed while in her pram.

Describing Cauchi’s transient lifestyle, Queensland Police assistant commissioner Roger Lowe noted that Cauchi moved frequently without a fixed address.

New South Wales police are conducting an investigation into Cauchi, who had only recently relocated to Sydney and had rented a small storage unit, which authorities have examined thoroughly.

In a statement, Cauchi’s family expressed understanding towards the police officer who ended his life, acknowledging her efforts to protect others.

The family conveyed their condolences to the victims’ families and those still recovering from the ordeal, expressing deep shock and trying to comprehend the horrific actions of Joel Cauchi, who had battled mental health issues since adolescence. They requested privacy during this difficult time while remaining in contact with law enforcement.
