UK Airport suspends all take-offs and landings ‘after suspicious package was found
Birmingham Airport temporarily halted its operations after an unspecified object was discovered on an Aer Lingus flight, prompting an emergency landing.
The pilot of the flight bound for Belfast declared an emergency shortly after take-off, leading to the deployment of a bomb squad and specialized personnel.
As the ATR72-600 aircraft landed safely, passengers were escorted away from the plane, which typically serves up to 76 travelers.
Despite initial concerns, Aer Lingus confirmed that the item in question posed no security threat. Nevertheless, the incident resulted in cancellations and delays for other flights, causing significant travel disruptions.
The aircraft, identified by its emergency code 7700, returned to Birmingham Airport, where it landed at 4:20 pm local time.
Following thorough inspections by law enforcement and security units, including canine teams, the airport resumed operations. West Midlands Police classified the incident as a false alarm, attributing it to a well-intentioned report.
Aer Lingus assured affected passengers that their teams were diligently working to provide suitable accommodations and assistance.
