Property Owner Arrested by Police in Connection with Kano Building Collapse

The Kano State Police Command has taken into custody the proprietor of the building that collapsed in the Kunta area of Gwale Local Government Area.

The collapse claimed the lives of three individuals and left two others critically injured, according to a statement released by SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the command’s spokesperson, on Saturday, April 27, 2024.

The preliminary investigation conducted by the police indicates a significant deficiency in the quality of the building’s construction. Furthermore, it was discovered that the property owner had not obtained the necessary approvals from the State Government.

“On April 26, 2024, around 10 am, the emergency lines of the State Police Command responded to a distress call concerning the tragic collapse of a two-story building under construction in the Kuntau area of Gwale LGA, Kano State,” the statement read.

Consequently, CP Mohammed Usaini Gumel, FIPMA, psc, the Commissioner of Police for Kano State Command, directed the immediate deployment of tactical teams to the scene to secure it, rescue victims, and coordinate with relevant emergency services and security agencies, including the Kano State Urban Planning and Development Authority (KNUPDA).

Rapid response efforts led to the recovery of five victims from the debris, who were promptly transported to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital in Kano.

Regrettably, three individuals were pronounced dead by the on-call pathologist, while two others with life-threatening injuries were admitted for treatment.

The ongoing police investigation has revealed deficiencies in the building’s construction quality and a lack of requisite government approvals.

Consequently, the property owner is currently undergoing questioning for potential violations of existing laws and non-compliance with building regulations.

The police command assures the public that upon completion of the investigation, the property owner will be prosecuted in court to ensure justice is served.

In conclusion, CP Mohammed Usaini Gumel, FIPMA, psc, expresses gratitude to the citizens of the State for promptly reporting the incident, which facilitated the successful rescue of survivors.

Additionally, commendation is extended to the combined rescue and security teams for their dedicated and timely response.
