US accuses Russia of using chemical weapons against Ukrainian troops
The United States has formally lodged accusations against Russia, alleging the use of chemical weapons as a tactical strategy in its conflict with Ukraine.
The US State Department released a statement on May 1, asserting that Russia had violated the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) by employing chloropicrin, a chemical agent, against Ukrainian forces.
Additionally, Russia was accused of deploying riot control agents, such as tear gas, which also contravenes the CWC.
The State Department’s statement elaborated on the pattern of chemical weapon usage, suggesting a deliberate tactic by Russian forces to dislodge Ukrainian troops from fortified positions and gain tactical advantages on the battlefield.
Ukrainian reports corroborate increased encounters with chemical irritants along the frontline with Russian forces in recent months, with documented incidents involving tear gas munitions equipped with prohibited toxic chemicals.
While Russia has consistently denied allegations of chemical weapon usage, the US announcement prompted retaliatory measures.
Under a 1991 law prohibiting chemical and biological warfare, the State Department imposed restrictions on foreign military financing, US government lines of credit, and export licenses for defense articles and sensitive items destined for Russia.
Furthermore, sanctions were imposed on three Russian government entities associated with chemical and biological weapons programs, along with four Russian companies contributing to these programs.
This action against Russia was part of a broader initiative involving nearly 300 new sanctions targeting entities and individuals across multiple countries for their support of Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine.
Notably, the sanctions encompassed entities from China, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Slovakia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates, reflecting a concerted international effort to condemn Russia’s actions in the ongoing conflict.
