Olympic Weightlifter Oleksandr Pielieshenko Dead At 30

Oleksandr Pielieshenko, a former weightlifting champion renowned for his participation in the 2016 Olympics, tragically lost his life while serving in the Ukraine-Russia conflict, as announced by the Ukrainian Weightlifting Federation on Monday.

Pielieshenko, aged only 30, succumbed while defending his homeland against foreign aggression, confirmed UWF official Viktor Slobodianiuk in a somber social media statement.

The circumstances surrounding Pielieshenko’s demise were not disclosed, leaving the weightlifting community and the nation mourning his untimely passing.

Slobodianiuk extended heartfelt condolences to Pielieshenko’s family and loved ones, acknowledging the profound loss experienced by the entire Ukrainian weightlifting fraternity. In tribute, Slobodianiuk emphasized, “Heroes do not die.”

Pielieshenko had achieved remarkable success in weightlifting, securing gold medals at the European championships in 2016 and 2017.

His notable athletic career included representation at the Rio Games in 2016. However, in 2018, he faced a setback after being banned for doping violations.

Despite this, Pielieshenko demonstrated his commitment to his country by joining Ukraine’s military forces at the onset of Russia’s invasion in 2022.

Expressing deep condolences, the UWF emphasized the profound loss felt by Pielieshenko’s family and those acquainted with him.

The weightlifting community mourns the loss of a remarkable athlete whose valor and dedication transcended his sporting achievements.
