Over the weekend, an incredibly offensive piece of art surfaced at a school art exhibition, sparking widespread condemnation and prompting officials to launch an investigation into how such a blatantly racist display was allowed to be showcased.

The artwork, created by a student from the New Hartford Central School District in New York, was a parody of a cereal advertisement titled “Monkey Premium.”

It featured LeBron James alongside images of monkeys, accompanied by a headline that read, “Eat Monkeys, Jump Like Monkeys!”

The posterboard included text suggesting that consuming the depicted food, shaped like monkeys and bananas, would enhance one’s jumping ability by 2-5 inches for about 2 hours.

Understandably, the artwork drew significant outrage due to its unmistakable references to racist stereotypes and tropes.

In response to the uproar, Superintendent of Schools Cosimo Tangorra Jr. issued a statement expressing disappointment that such a racially insensitive piece was not only created but also allowed to be displayed.

Tangorra Jr. assured the community that the matter was being thoroughly investigated, acknowledging the gravity of the situation.

While the student responsible for the artwork has been identified and contacted by officials, privacy concerns prevent the disclosure of further details or potential disciplinary actions.

Tangorra Jr. emphasized the importance of creating a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students, staff, and community members.

He acknowledged the impact of the incident on individuals who may now feel marginalized or unsafe within the school community.

Recognizing the need for improvement, Tangorra Jr. pledged to redouble efforts to ensure that every member of the school community feels valued and respected.

He emphasized the importance of education, open dialogue, and decisive action in fostering a culture of inclusion and equity within the district.
