Scottie Scheffler, the world’s number one golfer, quickly won over fellow inmates and law enforcement during his short stint behind bars.
Scheffler, arrested early Friday morning in Louisville, found himself a hit among those he encountered during his brief detention.
A fellow inmate recounted the experience, noting that the 27-year-old Masters winner was friendly and composed throughout his time in custody.
The inmate admitted he didn’t recognize Scheffler as a sports star until a police officer informed him, saying, “You know you’re talking to the number one golfer in the world, right?”
Scheffler expressed frustration about his situation, repeatedly stating it was “bulls***” that he was there. His popularity extended to the jail staff, with several corrections officers and officials stopping by to catch a glimpse of the golfing sensation.
Despite his arrest, Scheffler’s stay was brief. Taken into custody around 6 AM, he was released by 8:40 AM, allowing him to make his 10:08 AM tee time at the PGA Championship.
Scheffler not only arrived on time but also excelled, birdieing the first hole and shooting a 5-under, 66 in the second round.
Scheffler’s swift release, following charges that included felony assault for allegedly injuring an LMPD detective, sparked some controversy in Louisville. Critics questioned how he was freed so quickly despite the serious nature of the charges.
Addressing the incident, Scheffler called it a “misunderstanding,” explaining, “This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers.
It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do.
I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I’m hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today.”
Despite the drama, Scheffler’s ability to remain composed and amicable during a challenging situation left a notable impression on those he encountered behind bars.
