UK to introduce mandatory English test for migrant graduates

Migrant graduates entering the UK through the Graduate Route will soon face mandatory annual English tests. This new requirement is part of the government’s strategy to ensure that only the most qualified individuals remain in the UK.

The Cabinet is expected to approve these changes to the scheme, which currently allows international students to work in the UK for two years post-graduation.

In addition to the English tests, the policy will impact universities and colleges with high dropout rates. These institutions will lose their eligibility to recruit international students.

The Home Office will also target recruitment agents who mislead foreign students into abandoning their studies for low-paying jobs, often below minimum wage.

Government sources indicate that the revised Graduate Route scheme is a component of broader efforts to tighten immigration controls.

This initiative follows Prime Minister Rishi Sunak‘s announcement of plans to prevent British universities from offering low-quality postgraduate courses to foreign students, amid concerns that these programs are being used as a gateway to enter the UK.
