Angel Reese Says Caitlin Clark Not Only Reason WNBA’s Popular

Angel Reese wants to ensure she gets the respect she deserves for her role in elevating the popularity of the WNBA, insisting that it’s not solely due to Caitlin Clark.

The Chicago Sky rookie expressed her sentiments following a controversial game against Clark, where Reese’s teammate, Chennedy Carter, committed a flagrant foul on Clark, leading to widespread criticism.

The backlash was directed not only at Carter but also at Reese for her reaction to the foul. Addressing the incident, Reese commented on the lingering tensions from the national championship game, stating, “I’ve been dealing with this for two years now.”

She acknowledged her role as the “bad guy” in the narrative and embraced it, emphasizing, “I’ll take that [role] because look where women’s basketball is now. People who never used to talk about women’s basketball are talking about it.”

Reese, the number 7 overall pick, stressed that the surge in WNBA’s popularity isn’t solely due to Clark. “It’s not just because of one person.

It’s because of me too, and I want you to realize that,” she said. “A lot of us have done so much for this game. There are so many great players in this league that have deserved this recognition for a really long time, and luckily, it’s coming now.”

Carter also addressed the media regarding the controversial foul, standing by her actions. “At the end of the day, I’m a competitor,” the shooting guard stated.

“I’m gonna compete no matter who you are and no matter who’s in front of me.” She dismissed the racism narrative surrounding the incident, asserting it was purely a physical aspect of the game. “Heat of the moment play,” Carter explained. “It’s basketball. It’s all hoops.”
