Elon Musk Considers Apple Device Ban at His Companies Amid Tensions

SAN FRANCISCO – Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has issued a stark warning that he may prohibit the use of Apple devices at his companies if the tech giant proceeds with its proposed integration of OpenAI’s technology into its products.

On Monday, June 10, during Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), the company announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI.

This collaboration will integrate ChatGPT into Apple’s voice assistant, Siri, as part of the upcoming iOS 18.

According to Apple, Siri will have the capability to direct user inquiries to ChatGPT when it deems the AI can provide more accurate or comprehensive answers.

Users will be able to get responses from ChatGPT without opening the app, with similar functionality for sharing photos, PDFs, and other documents.

Musk, known for his outspoken views on AI and data security, reacted strongly to this development. He described it as a “security violation” and threatened to ban Apple devices from the premises of his enterprises, which include the social media platform X, electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla, and aerospace company SpaceX.

“If Apple integrates OpenAI at the OS level, then Apple devices will be banned at my companies. That is an unacceptable security violation,” Musk declared in a post on X.

He elaborated further, “Visitors will have to check their Apple devices at the door, where they will be stored in a Faraday cage.”

Musk’s concerns stem from his skepticism about Apple’s ability to ensure the security and privacy of user data once it is handed over to OpenAI.

He criticized Apple for not developing its own AI technology and questioned its capacity to safeguard user information.

“It’s patently absurd that Apple isn’t smart enough to make their own AI, yet is somehow capable of ensuring that OpenAI will protect your security & privacy! Apple has no clue what’s actually going on once they hand your data over to OpenAI. They’re selling you down the river,” Musk added.

The announcement from Apple marks a significant step in integrating advanced AI capabilities directly into consumer devices, but Musk’s vehement response highlights ongoing tensions and debates around data privacy and the ethical use of AI.
