Police have arrested Olalekan Oni, a final-year criminology student at the Federal University Oye Ekiti (FUOYE), Ekiti State, on allegations of raping a male colleague.

Oni, who is widely known by his nickname “Asiwaju,” recently presented his project research titled “Causes and Youth Involvement in Criminal Activity: A Case Study of Oye Local Government Area.”

A video circulating online on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, shows Oni being escorted away by police, dressed in a shirt and shorts, amidst a gathered crowd.

In response to the incident, the National Association of Ondo State Students issued a statement distancing itself from Oni, clarifying that he is neither a member nor an affiliate of their organization.

“We want to clarify that the individual Oni Olalekan, popularly known as Asiwaju, accused of sexual assault, is not a member, an executive, or appointee of our association,” the statement read.

They emphasized the importance of accurate information and underscored their commitment to a safe and inclusive environment for all members.

Similarly, the FUOYE Student Union Government released a disclaimer stating, “This is to inform the general public that Oni Olalekan, popularly known as Asiwaju, is not a member of the Students’ Union Government nor is he an appointee of the Students’ Union Government.

Any claims or assumptions to the contrary are incorrect.” They assured that they are actively addressing the matter and will take necessary actions to ensure justice is served.

The Ekiti State Police Command spokesperson, Abutu Sunday, confirmed the arrest and stated that the suspect has denied the allegations. “Investigation has commenced.

The suspect has been arrested and investigations have commenced because he is denying the allegations. We will see the result of the investigation,” Abutu added.

The incident has drawn significant attention, and both student bodies have taken steps to clarify their positions and ensure the public that they are committed to justice and the safety of their members.
