Michael Jackson would be pleased to know that his former pet chimp, Bubbles, is enjoying a fulfilling life as a senior primate at the Center for Great Apes.

According to Patti Ragan, the sanctuary’s director, Bubbles has ample freedom to roam and engage in various activities.

Now 41 years old and weighing 180 pounds, Bubbles enjoys exploring tunnels, building nests under trees, taking daily midday naps, and even painting.

He receives regular veterinary care and is well looked after by the sanctuary staff. The typical lifespan for a chimpanzee in captivity ranges from 50 to 60 years.

Bubbles is described as friendly and sociable, interacting well with both visitors and other chimpanzees at the sanctuary, including Oopsie, Boma, Ripley, Kodua, and Stryker.

Despite the sanctuary playing Michael Jackson’s music and videos, Bubbles doesn’t seem to show a preference for Michael’s music, suggesting that their once-strong bond has faded over time.

Michael Jackson could no longer keep Bubbles as a pet once he reached adulthood, initially sending him to a trainer in 2003 and then placing him at the sanctuary two years later.

Michael passed away on June 25, 2009, from acute propofol intoxication. The sanctuary does not plan to commemorate the 15th anniversary of his death.

However, the Michael Jackson Estate continues to support Bubbles, covering his annual care costs of about $27,000. Additionally, Michael’s fan club sends Bubbles treats like coconuts, mangoes, and blankets, which he enjoys during his naps.

Michael’s attorney and family members have also visited Bubbles over the years, enjoying heartwarming encounters with the chimpanzee.
