Model Arrested in Thailand Following Alleged Tongue-Biting Incident with Ex in Spain
Adaia Lopez, a 26-year-old Spanish model, has been apprehended after evading authorities for over a year.
She went on the run following a gruesome assault on her boyfriend in June 2016, during which she bit off part of his tongue after he attempted to end their relationship.
Following the attack, Lopez fled Spain and escaped to Thailand. Authorities finally located her in a squat in Sant Antoni de Calonge, a coastal resort north of Barcelona, after receiving an anonymous tip-off. Her arrest on Thursday night, June 27, marks the end of a lengthy search.
Lopez’s violent act left her 22-year-older boyfriend, identified only by his first name, Aaron, with significant and lasting injuries.
He experienced severe speech impairments and lost his sense of taste, leading to challenges in differentiating between salty and sweet foods.
The attack occurred at a house the couple shared in Vilanova i la Geltrú, near Barcelona, when Lopez was just 18 and Aaron was 40.
During her trial, Lopez claimed self-defense, alleging that she had been subjected to domestic violence, including an attempted drowning by Aaron.
Despite her defense, she was convicted of using her teeth as ‘pincers’ to tear out a portion of Aaron’s tongue during what was supposed to be a ‘last kiss’ as he tried to break up with her.
The court sentenced Lopez to six years in prison and ordered her to pay £50,000 in compensation to Aaron.
She was given 15 days to report to prison but defied the court order and became a fugitive. While on the run, she was reportedly seen enjoying holidays in Thailand, as indicated by social media photos.
Lopez is now set to serve her sentence following her court appearance and subsequent imprisonment. The victim’s lawyer, Pepe Rey, criticized her evasion of justice, stating, “We have a woman who committed a severe crime, causing irreversible damage, and yet she has been living freely despite a standing prison sentence.”
