Shehu Sani Urges Tinubu to Avoid Nepotism in Government Appointments

Former Senator Shehu Sani has called on President Bola Tinubu to prioritize competence over tribal affiliations in his government appointments.

In an interview with Channels TV on Sunday, June 30, Sani stated, “I advise President Tinubu to be mindful not to repeat the errors of President Buhari. Given his experience, he should understand the importance of this.”

Sani criticized the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, highlighting its lack of cabinet reshuffles and the prolonged tenure of ministers.

“Under President Buhari, ministers were appointed and kept in office for the entire eight years without significant reshuffles or removals.

Even when removals occurred, replacements took several months. This stagnation characterized the governance of the country,” he remarked.

He further condemned the nepotism prevalent during Buhari’s tenure, where appointees retained their positions regardless of performance.

“We witnessed nepotism at its peak under Buhari, with individuals holding office despite their inefficacy. Service chiefs were retained despite their failures, leading to the premature retirement of many qualified officers behind them, effectively stalling their careers.”

Sani urged Tinubu to focus on competence for effective governance. “If Nigeria is to progress, competence must be the primary criterion for appointments,” he asserted.

Sani also addressed the recent suicide bombings in Borno State, attributing them to Boko Haram insurgents and emphasizing the need for vigilance. “The bombings are a grim reminder from Boko Haram that we must remain vigilant and not become complacent.”

Reflecting on the previous administration, Sani noted the irony of expecting improved security under northern leadership.

“At one point, all security apparatus, including the Army, Navy, Air Force, Police, Civil Defence, and even paramilitary institutions like Customs, Immigration, and the Prison Service, were led by northerners.

Yet, the security situation deteriorated, proving that regional leadership alone does not resolve issues,” he concluded.
