Borno Commissioner – Suicide Bomber Solicited Alms Before Detonating Explosive

Sugum Mai Mele, Commissioner of Local Government and Emirates Affairs in Borno State, has revealed disturbing details about one of the suicide bombers involved in the recent attacks in Gwoza LGA.

According to Mele, the bomber disguised herself as a beggar and solicited alms before detonating her explosive device.

The attacks, which occurred on Saturday, June 29, targeted gatherings at a wedding and a funeral in Gwoza, resulting in 32 confirmed fatalities and numerous injuries.

Mele shared these insights during an interview on Channels TV on Monday, July 1, highlighting how the bombers infiltrated the town under the guise of being farmers.

“The suicide bombers smuggled themselves into the town by blending in with women returning from the farms,” Mele explained.

He criticized the laxity in the screening process at military gates, where farmers are supposed to be registered and monitored.

“There was a lapse in the screening process. These women entered the town under the pretense of being farmers, with one even carrying a baby,” Mele continued. “One of them posed as a beggar, collecting alms from unsuspecting people with amounts ranging from N20 to N100. Then, suddenly, she detonated the bomb.”

Mele’s account underscores the challenges of security screening and the deceptive tactics used by terrorists to carry out devastating attacks.

The incident has sparked concerns about improving security measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
