St. Vincent is a shapeshifter and world-builder. Her earlier albums have seen her immersing herself within the gritty New York Metropolis of the ’70s, taking part in the position of a pill-dependent housewife or changing into an alien cult chief.

On her newest album, All Born Screaming, St. Vincent appears much less involved with creating a brand new world and extra excited about digging into what it means to be alive in this world.

“To me, this file is about life and demise and love, and that’s it,” she tells World Cafe throughout a video name. “That’s all we bought.”

St. Vincent self-produced All Born Screaming, and on this session, she talks about her strategy and the way the album is kind of cut up into two components: a darker first half, adopted by a extra tender second half.

This episode of World Cafe was produced and edited by Kimberly Junod. The online story was created by Miguel Perez. Our engineer is Chris Williams. Our programming and reserving coordinator is Chelsea Johnson and our line producer is Will Loftus.
