Prohibitory Orders In Kolkata For 7 Days Amid Protests Over Doctor's Rape-Murder

The rape and homicide of a trainee physician has led to nationwide strikes by the medical fraternity.

Kolkata Police have banned gatherings across the RG Kar Medical School and Hospital in Kolkata for seven days amid protests in opposition to the rape and homicide of a postgraduate trainee physician. Part 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (previously Part 144 of the CrPC) has been imposed across the hospital, efficient from Sunday.

In an order launched on Saturday by the Commissioner of Police, Vineet Kumar Goyal, it was said that rallies, conferences, processions, dharnas, demonstrations, and the illegal meeting of 5 or extra individuals are prohibited within the specified space of Kolkata.

On 9 August, a postgraduate trainee physician was allegedly raped and murdered whereas on responsibility at RG Kar Medical School in Kolkata, resulting in nationwide strikes by the medical fraternity.

On Wednesday, the protest floor and the hospital campus at RG Kar had been vandalised by a mob, forcing safety personnel to disperse the group.
