Canzetta Maria “Candi” Staton (/ˈsteɪtən/) (born March 13, 1940 in Hanceville, Alabama) is an American soul and gospel singer, finest recognized in the US for her 1970 remake of Tammy Wynette’s “Stand By Your Man” and her 1976 disco chart-topper “Younger Hearts Run Free”. Early years
On the age of 11 or twelve, Staton and her sister Maggie had been despatched to the Jewell Christian Academy in Nashville, Tennessee. Staton appeared on the September 23, 1972 version (Season 2, Episode 1) of Soul Prepare. In 1976, Staton started collaborating with producer David Crawford on disco songs corresponding to “Younger Hearts Run Free”, which reached #1 on the US R&B charts, #2 within the UK Singles Chart and went Prime 20 on the Pop Sizzling 100 through the summer time of 1976. Collectively they based Beracah Ministries in Atlanta, Georgia with assist from Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker’s PTL Ministries. She has since recorded eight gospel albums, two of which acquired Grammy Award nominations.
