The Nigeria Customs Service Oyo/Osun Space Command has intercepted a big consignment of counterfeit medication with a duty-paid worth of N596,856,500.
The seized medication embrace Analgin Injection, Amoxicillin Capsules (500mg), Buscomac Tablets (10mg), Chloramphenicol Tablets (BP 250mg), and Pentazocine Injection (30mg), amongst others, which have been hid in sacks and cartons and seized in Iwere Ile, Oke-Ogun, Oyo State.
At a press briefing on Wednesday in Ibadan, Space Controller Dr Ben Oramalugo highlighted the significance of the seizure, calling it a major crackdown on smuggling and counterfeit prescription drugs.
He reported that the Oyo/Osun Command generated a complete income of N23.9 billion for the third quarter of 2024, with a cumulative whole of N56.6 billion from January to September.
Oramalugo credited the command’s income success to streamlined procedures and compliance with customs rules amid difficult monetary circumstances.
In keeping with him, from August to October 2024, the Command’s anti-smuggling operations yielded numerous contraband gadgets with a DPV of N755,896,700, together with 433 baggage of international parboiled rice, second-hand garments, used tyres, and over 700 kg of hashish sativa.
Addressing the authenticity of the intercepted medication, Oyo State Director of the NDLEA, Mrs Roseline Ajayi, confirmed their substandard high quality.
“With out going to the lab, we decided they have been faux and substandard,” she said, noting that public destruction of those counterfeit medication will quickly happen as a part of regulatory actions.
The seized hashish sativa was handed over to the Nationwide Company for Meals and Drug Administration and Management. Superintendent of Narcotics Abogunrin Olatunji said that the company would search Federal Excessive Courtroom approval for public destruction and invite the press to witness it.
