Nigeria Back on Track with 2-0 Win Over Rwanda in World Cup Qualifiers
Nigeria reignited their 2026 World Cup qualification hopes with a crucial 2-0 victory over Rwanda, thanks to a brilliant brace from Victor Osimhen.
The Super Eagles entered the match in desperate need of a win, sitting fifth in Group C after a sluggish start to the campaign that saw them go winless in their first four games, drawing three and losing one.
Under the guidance of new manager Eric Chelle, Nigeria wasted no time asserting dominance.
Osimhen opened the scoring just 11 minutes in, expertly losing his marker at the back post to meet Ademola Lookman’s pinpoint free-kick.
Rwanda goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari kept the hosts in the game with a superb save to deny Moses Simon, while William Troost-Ekong came close twice from set pieces.
Just before halftime, Osimhen doubled Nigeria’s lead in style, latching onto a through ball and finishing clinically to put Rwanda in a tough spot heading into the second half.
Unlike their previous encounter in November—when Rwanda came from behind to win—there was no comeback this time.
The Super Eagles held firm to secure a vital three points, reigniting their qualification campaign.
With this victory, Nigeria climbs the Group C standings, giving them renewed momentum as they push for a spot in the 2026 World Cup.
