PDP Insists Udeh-Okoye Remains National Secretary Despite Supreme Court Ruling

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reaffirmed that Sunday Udeh-Okoye remains its National Secretary, despite the Supreme Court ruling reinstating Senator Samuel Anyanwu.

Supreme Court Affirms Udeh-Okoye as PDP National Secretary, Rejects Anyanwu

In a statement released on Friday by PDP National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba, the party maintained that the Supreme Court ruling aligns with its position that party leadership decisions are internal affairs. The PDP emphasized that Udeh-Okoye’s appointment had already been ratified through the party’s statutory organs and bodies, following the provisions of its constitution (as amended in 2017).

The Supreme Court ruling reaffirmed that party leadership matters are beyond judicial interference. The PDP viewed this as a victory for democracy and the autonomy of political parties.

How Udeh-Okoye Became PDP National Secretary

The party explained that Anyanwu vacated the position after becoming the PDP governorship candidate for the November 2023 Imo State election. In response, the South East Zonal Executive Committee nominated Udeh-Okoye as his replacement on October 20, 2023. This nomination was subsequently approved by the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) on November 7, 2023, and endorsed by key party bodies, including:

  • Board of Trustees (BoT)
  • South East Zonal Caucus
  • PDP Governors’ Forum
  • Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)

PDP Calls for Unity Amidst Leadership Dispute

The party urged its members to remain peaceful and support Udeh-Okoye’s leadership, emphasizing that the Supreme Court’s judgment validates their internal decision-making processes.

With this stance, the PDP is making it clear that Anyanwu will not be returning as National Secretary, and Udeh-Okoye’s position remains unchanged.
