Jonathan Slams Tinubu’s Emergency Rule in Rivers
Jonathan Criticizes Tinubu’s Emergency Rule in Rivers, Warns of Repercussions
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has strongly opposed President Bola Tinubu’s decision to suspend elected officials in Rivers State, warning that such actions could damage Nigeria’s global reputation.
Speaking at the Haske Satumari Foundation Colloquium in Abuja on Saturday, Jonathan expressed his disappointment over the removal of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the state House of Assembly for six months.
He argued that the move by both the executive and legislative arms of government projects Nigeria negatively on the international stage.
Jonathan’s remarks came in response to Tinubu’s recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, citing the need to restore stability amid ongoing political tensions.
To oversee the state’s administration during this period, Tinubu appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ette Ibas as interim administrator.
He clarified that the judicial arm of government in Rivers State would continue operating as usual.
While Tinubu defended the decision under Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution, Jonathan warned that such measures could set a dangerous precedent.
He stressed that Nigeria’s ability to attract foreign investments depends on the stability and credibility of its political and legal institutions.
The former president, typically reserved on political matters, said he felt compelled to speak out due to mounting concerns from Nigerians, particularly those from the Niger Delta.
He also condemned alleged interference in judicial proceedings, arguing that undue influence on the judiciary erodes public confidence in the legal system.
Tinubu maintained that the emergency rule was necessary to restore order and ensure political actors adhere to constitutional principles.
However, Jonathan’s criticism highlights growing concerns over executive overreach and the potential long-term impact on Nigeria’s democracy.
