Rivers Emergency Rule to End Once Stability is Restored – FG
Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has assured that President Bola Tinubu will lift the state of emergency in Rivers State as soon as order is fully restored.
In an interview with The Nation, Idris reaffirmed Tinubu’s commitment to reinstating democratic governance, stating:
“As soon as he assesses that sanity has returned to Rivers State, he will ensure the restoration of all democratic structures. The president will not wait a minute longer than necessary.”
No Hidden Agenda Behind Emergency Rule
Dismissing speculation that the emergency rule was politically motivated, Idris emphasized that the decision was made purely to restore stability.
“The president has no intention whatsoever to take over the governance of Rivers State. He has no plan to be or to appoint a governor for the state,” he clarified.
He explained that the deteriorating political crisis in Rivers made presidential intervention necessary, calling it a painful but responsible decision in line with constitutional provisions.
“Democracy requires all three arms of government to function together. When that balance is lost, intervention becomes necessary,” Idris stated.
Emergency Rule and Next Steps
The state of emergency, declared last week, resulted in the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and all state assembly members. Retired Naval Chief Ibok-Ete Ibas was appointed as the sole administrator.
The federal government maintains that the emergency rule will only last until normal governance structures are restored in Rivers State.
