16 Northern Travelers Burned to Death by Mob in Edo Over Kidnapping Accusations
Sixteen men traveling from Port Harcourt to Kano for Sallah were brutally killed by a mob in Udune Efandion, Uromi, Edo State, after being accused of kidnapping.
The tragic incident occurred on Thursday, March 27, when local vigilantes intercepted the travelers around 1:30 p.m.
Upon searching their vehicle, the vigilantes allegedly found machetes and locally made guns, leading them to suspect the men of being kidnappers.
The accusations quickly escalated into mob violence, with enraged youths setting the truck on fire while some victims were still trapped inside. Others were forcibly removed from the vehicle, placed in a wheelbarrow, and thrown into a fire in the middle of the road.
In a disturbing video circulating online, a victim can be heard crying out in agony as he is burned alive. Witnesses can be heard reacting, with one woman expressing sympathy, while others coldly dismiss the cries, insisting the men deserved their fate.
By the time security forces arrived, it was too late to intervene. The gruesome jungle justice has sparked widespread debate, with some arguing the men were innocent hunters rather than criminals. The incident has also reignited concerns over mob violence and the dangers of vigilante justice in Nigeria.
