U.S. Vice President JD Vance has accused Denmark of neglecting Greenland’s security against alleged threats from China and Russia, urging the Arctic island to cut ties with Copenhagen and strike a deal with the United States.

During a visit to Greenland, Vance dismissed previous remarks by President Donald Trump about taking the island by force, instead emphasizing “self-determination” for Greenlanders, who have been under Danish rule for over 300 years.

He argued that Denmark had failed to invest adequately in Greenland’s defense and development, leaving it vulnerable to foreign incursions.

Denmark’s government swiftly condemned Vance’s comments. Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen acknowledged the need for greater security investments but criticized the vice president’s confrontational tone. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen also defended Denmark’s role, highlighting increased defense spending and cooperation with the U.S.

Vance’s brief visit, initially planned as a cultural tour by his wife, Usha, was overshadowed by security concerns and protests. He spent only a few hours on the island, visiting the Pituffik Space Base, a key missile defense site. While denying any immediate plans to expand the U.S. military presence, he promised greater American investments in naval resources and icebreakers.

Despite Vance’s assurances, Greenland’s leadership remains opposed to U.S. annexation, with polls showing overwhelming public support for maintaining ties with Denmark.
