Authorities confirmed that Odutayo was arraigned on March 12, 2025, at Court 1, Tinubu, following her discharge from the hospital. She faces charges of reckless and careless driving on a public highway, which allegedly resulted in Opayele’s death.

The fatal incident, which took place on March 4, 2025, has sparked significant public outrage. Over 35,000 Nigerians have signed a petition demanding justice, with many urging authorities to escalate the charges from reckless driving to manslaughter.

Confirming the legal proceedings, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin issued a statement on X (formerly Twitter), saying:

“We #LagosPoliceNG acknowledge public concerns regarding the tragic accident that claimed the life of Adetunji Opayele (Teejay) on March 4, 2025. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and all who have been affected by this loss.

“We can confirm that following a thorough investigation, Abiola Odutayo ‘f’ was arraigned in Court 1, Tinubu, on March 12, 2025, after being discharged from the hospital. She was charged with driving on a public highway in a reckless and careless manner, without due care and attention to other road users, thereby causing the death of Tunji Opayele ‘m’, aged 32—an offence punishable under the law.”

Hundeyin further revealed that the court granted Odutayo bail and adjourned the case until April 16, 2025. He reassured the public of the Lagos State Police Command’s commitment to transparency, fairness, and justice.

Meanwhile, the incident has fueled anger and controversy, as reports surfaced that Odutayo allegedly hesitated to assist the critically injured Opayele, citing concerns about staining her car. Witnesses claim that bystanders struggled to get him medical attention, with multiple hospitals reportedly refusing treatment. Tragically, Opayele was pronounced dead after hours of unsuccessful efforts to secure urgent care.
