Activist Adetoun Confronts Mother Over Child Labour in Estate Sweeping Incident
Nigerian activist Adetoun has sparked debate online after sharing a video of her confrontation with a woman who brought her 11-year-old daughter to sweep an estate as early as 4:30 a.m. daily.
The woman, employed by the estate management for cleaning duties, reportedly brought her daughter along since it was a public holiday. However, Adetoun, a resident of the estate, noticed the child working and immediately confronted the mother.
Expressing strong disapproval, Adetoun insisted that making a child engage in such labour at dawn was unacceptable. In the video, she firmly tells the mother:
“You don’t bring an 11-year-old girl as early as 4:30–5 a.m. for child labour. I am not going to listen to your predicament. Don’t ever bring this girl out.”
She further warned that if the child was seen sweeping again, authorities might intervene and take her away from the mother.
The viral video has sparked mixed reactions from Nigerians. While some commended Adetoun for standing against child labour, others criticized her approach, arguing that she publicly humiliated the mother without considering her struggles. The incident has reignited conversations around child labour, poverty, and the balance between discipline and public accountability.
