Ondo Farmer Remanded for Burning Brother’s N20m Farm
A 56-year-old farmer in Ondo State, Oyinlola Jacob, has been remanded at the Olokuta Correctional Centre for allegedly setting fire to his brother’s farm, causing an estimated N20 million in damages.
Jacob was arraigned before an Akure Magistrates’ Court by the Ondo State Police Command on charges of arson. According to police prosecutor Taiwo Oniyere, the incident occurred on January 29, 2025, at Odebei Farm in Ipogun, Ondo State.
The farmland, owned by Ilemobayo Jacob, contained valuable crops, including cocoa, palm trees, plantains, and kolanut trees, which were reportedly destroyed in the fire.
The prosecutor cited that the offence violated Sections 516 and 443 of the Ondo State Criminal Code, Cap 37, Vol. 1, Laws of 2006.
Jacob pleaded not guilty to the charge. His defense counsel, O.A. Adanlawo, appealed for bail, assuring the court that his client would not flee and would provide reliable sureties.
Magistrate Olusola Olujobi granted bail set at N10 million with two sureties in like sum. The sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction, provide an affidavit of means, and submit passport-sized photographs.
However, Jacob was unable to meet the bail conditions and was remanded in custody. The court adjourned the case until July 29, 2025, for further proceedings.
