Frederiksen arrived in Nuuk on Wednesday for discussions with Greenland’s newly elected government, kicking off a three-day visit aimed at strengthening ties between Denmark and its semi-autonomous territory.

Her visit follows a recent trip by U.S. Vice President JD Vance, which was met with a lukewarm response from both Danish and Greenlandic leaders.

“The U.S. shall not take over Greenland. Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders,” Frederiksen stated emphatically, signaling Denmark’s firm stance against any U.S. acquisition attempts.

She acknowledged the growing geopolitical interest in the Arctic and pledged to reinforce the relationship between Copenhagen and Nuuk, emphasizing mutual respect and collaboration.

Greenland’s incoming Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, who is set to lead a coalition government following his party’s recent electoral victory, welcomed Frederiksen’s visit.

He reiterated that Denmark remains Greenland’s closest ally, despite ongoing discussions about the island’s political future.

Frederiksen also vowed to champion equal rights for Greenlanders and Danes within the Danish realm and stressed the need for a united approach in handling foreign and security policy.

“Our top priority is to address geopolitical challenges and ensure we navigate them together. This is what truly matters now,” she stated, highlighting the urgency of diplomatic cooperation in the evolving Arctic landscape.
