De Zerbi Refused Training as Players Urged Club to Drop Him After Loss

Roberto De Zerbi reportedly refused to lead Marseille’s training session following their surprising 3-1 loss to Reims, sparking unrest within the squad.

The defeat came as a shock, with Reims — a team battling relegation — taking a dominant three-goal lead by the 68th minute through goals from Keito Nakamura, Mamadou Diakhon, and Valentin Atangana. Although Valentin Rongier pulled one back for Marseille, it wasn’t enough to salvage the match.

According to L’Équipe, De Zerbi was so furious with the result that he opted out of overseeing Monday’s training session, which triggered tension among the players.

The situation escalated when the players, frustrated with his absence and already upset over being forced to train the day after the loss, refused to train under his assistant coaches.

Marseille’s sporting director, Mehdi Benatia, had to step in to manage the growing unrest, with some players reportedly asking him to prevent De Zerbi from leading them in their next Ligue 1 fixture. The team is set to face Toulouse on Saturday night.

Amid the chaos, De Zerbi’s future at Marseille remains uncertain, especially as he continues to be linked with the managerial role at AC Milan.
