Postecoglou Unbothered by Fan Abuse, Vows to Keep Fighting

Tottenham head coach Ange Postecoglou has insisted that he remains unaffected by criticism from Spurs supporters and is determined to “keep fighting,” despite his team’s struggles this season.

Spurs suffered their 16th Premier League defeat in 30 games with a 1-0 loss to Chelsea on Thursday. The frustration among traveling fans was evident, with boos greeting Postecoglou’s decision to substitute Lucas Bergvall for Pape Sarr in the 65th minute.

When Sarr later appeared to equalize, Postecoglou cupped his ear toward the fans in celebration—only for the goal to be disallowed after a VAR review.

Asked about the fan backlash, Postecoglou responded, “No, I am fine. I don’t get affected by that. I will continue fighting my whole career. I understand the criticism toward me, but if anyone thinks the players aren’t trying, they’re watching the wrong game.”

Postecoglou on VAR: ‘It’s Killing the Game’

Reflecting on his reaction to Sarr’s goal, Postecoglou admitted that he had broken his own rule about celebrating too soon. “Since VAR came in, I’ve told myself not to celebrate goals.

But I just felt we needed something, and it was a cracking goal from Pape. My mistake was celebrating—it won’t happen again,” he said.

The match saw two lengthy VAR reviews, adding nearly seven minutes of stoppage time. “There were 12 minutes of extra time yesterday—that’s not why VAR was brought in,” Postecoglou said.

“I feel like a lone voice on this. Maybe I’m disconnected, but when I retire, I’ll probably watch less football and find another hobby.”

Uncertain Future at Spurs

Tottenham currently sit 14th in the Premier League with eight games left, just one spot above their worst-ever league finish in 1994.

Despite their struggles, they remain in contention for the Europa League, with a quarter-final clash against Eintracht Frankfurt next week.

Postecoglou, whose contract runs until 2027, has won just 44 points in his last 39 league matches. While he has pointed to injuries as a key factor in Tottenham’s poor form, he has also acknowledged speculation about his future.

“There are outstanding candidates who could replace me if I’m sacked,” he said, with Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola, Fulham’s Marco Silva, and Brentford’s Thomas Frank all linked to the job.

For now, Postecoglou remains focused on finishing the season strong, despite growing pressure from fans and the club’s hierarchy.
