Gospel Singer Buchi Shares Why He Left Cultism for Christ

Gospel singer Buchi Atuonwu, popularly known as Buchi, has opened up about his past involvement in cultism before dedicating his life to Jesus Christ.

In a candid interview with Gaise Baba on the show Black Flame, Buchi shared his powerful transformation story, revealing that his journey out of cultism wasn’t just a physical escape, but a spiritual awakening.

He explained that he initially saw cultism as merely a group defined by secrecy and rituals, but later came to understand its deeper spiritual implications.

When asked how he left the cult, Buchi recounted a defining moment when Jesus revealed to him that the true nature of cultism extended beyond what could be seen. “Jesus gave me a deeper understanding,” he said.

“He showed me that cultism was not just a physical association. It was a spiritual reality. I realized I was fighting spiritual battles with physical tools—and that would never work. So I turned to Jesus.”

He recalled a vivid experience that marked a turning point in his life: “I was among a crowd of about 200 people, and I was their singer.

It was around 1 or 2 in the morning. I had no microphone, but I had to lead loudly enough for everyone to hear. Some of them were carrying coffins, others held red lamps—symbols of danger. We were on a dark procession, and I was leading them in songs.”

In the middle of this eerie scene, something unexpected happened. “As I was singing, the group was to my right, and from the left, I heard a voice whisper into my ear, saying, ‘You don’t belong here.’ I was stunned, but I couldn’t stop singing. The voice startled me, but it stayed with me,” he said.

Reflecting on that moment, Buchi added, “The cult is a leveller—people from different backgrounds united by a common cause, not by tribe. But I realized I was walking in darkness. That voice was the turning point.”

Now a renowned gospel artist, Buchi says he is committed to using music to spread the message of Christ and to help others find the light as he once did.
