NDLEA Destroys Record 1.6m Kg Drug Seizure
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has destroyed a historic 1.6 million kilograms of assorted illicit drugs, marking the largest single batch of narcotics ever incinerated by the agency.

The destruction, which took place on Saturday at a secluded site in Ipara along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State, involved substances seized from operations across Lagos, Ogun, and Oyo states.
The event was attended by a wide range of stakeholders including government representatives, traditional leaders, religious figures, security agencies, international partners, NGOs, and community leaders.
NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi detailed the scale of the haul, which included 123 kg of cocaine, 46.8 kg of heroin, 1.4 million kg of cannabis, 148,000 kg of codeine syrup, 3,244.26 kg of tramadol, 1,544 kg of skuchies (a local drug cocktail), and 111 kg of methamphetamine, among others.
Speaking at the event, NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd) emphasized the agency’s unwavering commitment to combating drug trafficking and abuse in Nigeria.
“This monumental destruction serves as a powerful reminder of the threat these substances pose to public health and security,” Marwa said. “Our agency remains committed to ensuring these narcotics are not only seized but completely eradicated.”
Marwa also issued a stern warning to drug traffickers: “The era of impunity is over. Under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, we have the political will and institutional support to dismantle drug networks.
In the past four years alone, we have secured 10,572 convictions of offenders who are now serving jail terms. There will be no safe haven for traffickers in Nigeria.”
The NDLEA’s latest action underscores its intensified efforts in tackling Nigeria’s drug crisis through aggressive enforcement, public awareness, and international collaboration.
