Boko Haram on its Last Leg, Says Information Minister

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has declared that Boko Haram has been significantly weakened, describing the terrorist group as “standing on its last leg.”

In an interview with France24, Idris highlighted the progress made by Nigerian security forces over the years, stating that Boko Haram no longer controls any territory as it once did.

“They’re on their last legs,” Idris said. “Previously, they held entire territories—local governments, towns, and cities—particularly in the northeastern part of Nigeria. That is no longer the case.

They’ve largely scattered, retreating into remote areas and now resort to attacking soft targets.”

He acknowledged that while the group has not been completely wiped out, their capacity to pose a serious national threat has been severely diminished.

“For clarity, we are not saying Boko Haram has been 100 percent eliminated, but their strength and operational capacity have been significantly degraded to the point where they no longer present a major challenge to Nigeria’s security,” Idris added.

Boko Haram, which has waged a violent insurgency for over a decade, is responsible for mass killings, abductions, and widespread displacement, particularly in Nigeria’s northeastern region. The group once held several local government areas, declaring a so-called Islamic caliphate.

However, despite recent gains, concerns remain. Just last week, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum raised alarm over renewed attacks by Boko Haram elements that led to the withdrawal of some military formations from local government areas.

Idris reiterated the federal government’s commitment to restoring peace and normalcy across all affected regions.
