Ondo: 9-Year-Old Girl Dies in House Fire After Being Locked In

A tragic incident occurred in the Samakinwa area of Ondo town, Ondo State, where a 9-year-old girl named Testimony was burned to death in a house fire on Monday, April 14, 2025.

The young girl, who was reportedly mentally challenged, had been locked inside one of the rooms in a four-bedroom apartment by her guardian, who had left for church.

Around 4:00 p.m., an electrical surge allegedly sparked a fire that quickly engulfed the building, destroying properties and trapping the girl inside.

Despite desperate rescue efforts by local youths and residents, the room’s locked door made it impossible to save her.

The fire consumed the room, and the girl was burned beyond recognition. Her charred remains were later recovered by sympathisers who broke into the room after the fire had been extinguished.

The heartbreaking scene drew mourning and outrage from neighbours, who gathered to grieve over the loss.

The Divisional Police Officer of Yaba Division, CSP Victor Olowolagba, visited the site with his team and confirmed that four individuals had been invited for questioning as part of an ongoing investigation to uncover the cause of the fire and examine the circumstances of the child’s death.

Testimony’s body was later evacuated to a morgue, and authorities have assured the public of a thorough inquiry. The youth leader of the area, Comrade Akinbinuade Akinyemi, expressed deep sorrow and called for proactive measures to prevent further tragedies, noting a troubling rise in fire incidents within the community.
