McTominay Winner Helps Napoli Seal Serie A Title

Scotland midfielder Scott McTominay delivered a moment of brilliance with a stunning scissor-kick volley to help Napoli clinch their fourth Serie A title in dramatic fashion, securing a 2-0 victory over Cagliari at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

With title rivals Inter Milan leading 2-0 at Como, Napoli needed a win to finish top of the table. Backed by a raucous home crowd, the hosts dominated early proceedings.

The breakthrough came when McTominay, who joined Napoli from Manchester United in a £25.7 million deal last August, met Matteo Politano’s pinpoint cross with an acrobatic finish that sent the crowd into a frenzy.

Napoli, aiming to be crowned Italian champions for the second time in three seasons, sealed the title in the second half through Romelu Lukaku.
The Belgian striker showcased power and pace to shrug off defenders Michel Adopo and Yerry Mina before calmly slotting the ball past Alen Sherri for Napoli’s second goal.
The celebrations that followed saw players and coaches erupt onto the pitch, and Lukaku was booked for removing his shirt in jubilation.
The remainder of the match was played in celebratory fashion as Napoli fans, both in the stadium and across the city, erupted in fireworks and flares well before the final whistle.
It marked the club’s fourth Scudetto—following triumphs in 1986-87, 1989-90, and 2022-23—and the first under manager Antonio Conte, who, despite being suspended and watching from the stands, joined his players for emotional post-match celebrations.
He has now won Serie A titles with Juventus, Inter Milan, and Napoli.
McTominay, who ended the season with 12 goals and four assists, was named Serie A Player of the Season—a remarkable achievement in his debut campaign.
He was visibly emotional at full-time, shedding tears as he celebrated with teammates and fans.
Fellow Scot Billy Gilmour also played a key role in the win, with both Scottish players making history.
McTominay and Gilmour became the first Scots in 120 years to win the Serie A title, a feat last achieved in 1905 by Jack Diment and James Squair with Juventus.
Napoli had threatened early, with Giacomo Raspadori and Gilmour going close, while Politano and Rrahmani also tested the keeper.
Lukaku capped off the win in the 51st minute, latching onto a long ball from Rrahmani and muscling past defenders to score a brilliant solo goal.
The title race could have gone to a playoff had both Napoli lost and Inter drawn, but Napoli’s victory ensured a clear conclusion to the season.
Inter Milan will now turn their attention to the Champions League final on May 31, where they face Paris Saint-Germain at the Allianz Arena in Munich.
For Napoli, the night ended with fireworks, tears, and a place in history—cemented by the unlikely heroes from Scotland.
