Oyo Court Remands Brothers for Allegedly Insulting Police Officer

A Grade ‘A’ Customary Court in Mapo, Ibadan, has ordered the remand of two brothers, Usman Wasiu (20) and Toheeb Wasiu (26), at a correctional facility following allegations that they insulted a police officer and disrupted public peace.
The duo appeared before the court on a two-count charge of conspiracy and breach of public peace. They pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Presiding over the case, Court President Mrs. S.M. Akintayo granted each defendant bail set at N200,000, with the condition that they each provide two credible sureties.
The sureties are required to present valid identification and proof of tax payment to the Oyo State government for the past three years.
The court adjourned the case until July 2, 2025, for hearing.
According to the prosecution, led by Inspector Ayodele Ayeni, the incident occurred at approximately 12:30 a.m. on May 13, at the entrance of the Mapo Police Station.
The prosecutor alleged that the brothers verbally assaulted Inspector Taiwo Ige and two other officers with vulgar and inflammatory language, which allegedly provoked public unrest.
Inspector Ayeni stated that the brothers’ actions incited members of the public against law enforcement, creating a tense and disorderly atmosphere.
He noted that the offences are in violation of Sections 516 and 249 of the Criminal Code, Cap 38, Volume II, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
