Two Men Die in Ditch Chasing Debtor in Kano

Two young men tragically lost their lives after a pursuit ended in a fatal accident at a waterlogged ditch along Ring Road, opposite Doroyai Babba in Kano State.
The Kano State Fire Service Public Relations Officer, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Thursday, May 22, 2025.
He revealed that the service received an emergency call around 9:36 a.m. on Wednesday from a concerned citizen, Garba Sani.
According to the report, the victims—27-year-old Saifullahi Muhammad and 29-year-old Halifa Abdullahi, both residents of Gwammaja quarters—had been pursuing a debtor from Kofar Ruwa Market to recover a pending debt.
During the chase, the fleeing individual stumbled into a water-filled ditch. In an attempt to catch him, the two men also entered the ditch but became trapped.
Fire service responders arrived promptly and retrieved the victims from the water. However, they were found unconscious and rushed to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, where medical personnel confirmed both men dead.
Their bodies were later handed over to Inspector Halifa Muhammad of the Kuntau Police Division for further investigation.
In a separate rescue effort, the Fire Service responded to another emergency at 6:01 a.m. involving two well-drainers trapped inside a well in Danmaliki village near Chalawa Filling Station.
The workers were reportedly affected by extreme heat and low oxygen levels while inside the well. Fortunately, the rescue team managed to pull them out alive.
The victims were found conscious and later declared to be in stable condition.
The well-drainers were handed over to the Ward Head of Danmaliki, Alhaji Ali Alkasim.
The Fire Service has urged the public to remain vigilant around open water bodies and wells, particularly during the rainy season.
Residents are also encouraged to report emergencies promptly to prevent further tragedies.
