27 Arrested Over DPO’s Killing in Kano

The Kano State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 27 individuals in connection with the tragic killing of Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Baba Ali Muhammad, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Rano Police Division in Rano Local Government Area.
The incident unfolded following the death of a young man, Abdullahi Musa, who had been taken into police custody.
According to the command’s spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, Musa was arrested on Sunday, May 25, 2025, after reports from the public alleged he was riding dangerously under the influence of substances.
He was detained at the Rano Police Division but later began to exhibit signs of weakness.
Officers reportedly rushed him to Rano General Hospital, where he died on Monday, May 26, at about 6:00 a.m. while receiving treatment.
News of Musa’s death quickly spread, sparking outrage. A group of enraged youths stormed the Rano Police Division, setting parts of the building and two vehicles on fire, destroying ten other vehicles, and launching a violent assault on the DPO. CSP Muhammad sustained critical injuries and was later pronounced dead at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.
SP Kiyawa noted that the police have since regained control of the area and restored order. Twenty-seven suspects were arrested in connection with the arson, vandalism, and fatal assault.
Kano State Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Bakori, visited the scene of the attack and the Emir of Rano, Ambassador Dr. Mohammed Isah Umar (Autan Bawo 19), to express condolences.
He also directed a full and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding both Musa’s death and the subsequent violence, with the aim of bringing all perpetrators to justice.
While extending sympathies to the family of the late DPO, the police command urged the public to remain calm and not take matters into their own hands.
Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to peace and order and called for cooperation from residents during the ongoing investigation.
