Cabrera Clinches Second Senior Major in a Week

Ángel Cabrera captured his second senior major title in just seven days with a hard-fought victory at the Senior PGA Championship held at Congressional Country Club in Maryland.
The 55-year-old Argentine, who previously won the 2007 U.S. Open and the 2009 Masters, followed up his recent triumph at the Regions Tradition by edging out Padraig Harrington to win by a single stroke.
Harrington, from Ireland, finished tied for second alongside Denmark’s Thomas Bjørn, both of whom are seasoned Ryder Cup veterans and former European team captains.
Cabrera’s win marks a remarkable comeback for the golfer, who returned to major competition this year after serving 30 months in prison.
Convicted in 2021 of charges including assault and intimidation of former partners, Cabrera was released in August 2023. Since then, he has expressed remorse in interviews and has resumed competitive golf.
Earlier this year, he made his first Masters appearance in six years, though he missed the cut. Nonetheless, as a past Masters champion, Cabrera retains a lifetime exemption to compete at Augusta.
This latest win also grants Cabrera eligibility for the 2025 PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club, mirroring how Richard Bland, last year’s Senior PGA champion, qualified to play at Quail Hollow this May, where he finished a respectable 37th against top-tier competition.
With momentum on his side, Cabrera will now set his sights on the U.S. Senior Open in Colorado Springs next month, followed by the Senior Open Championship at Sunningdale in July, where he will be considered a strong contender for further major success.
