Tinubu Heads to Lagos for ECOWAS 50th Anniversary, Project Launches

President Bola Tinubu is set to depart Abuja for Lagos on Tuesday, May 26, to participate in a series of events marking the 50th anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
According to a statement from presidential aide Bayo Onanuga, the ECOWAS golden jubilee celebrations were officially launched last month in Accra, Ghana.
In Lagos, the commemorations will feature a symbolic reenactment of the original 1975 declaration, hosted at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) in Victoria Island.
As Chairman of ECOWAS, President Tinubu will deliver a keynote address highlighting the economic bloc’s achievements over the past five decades.
The Chairman of the NIIA and former Minister of External Affairs, Prof. Bolaji Akinyemi, is expected to present a detailed review of ECOWAS’s history, followed by expert panel discussions.
Notably, former Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon (Rtd)—the only surviving signatory of the ECOWAS founding declaration—will attend all ceremonies and deliver a special address at Eko Hotels.
In addition to the ECOWAS events, President Tinubu will on Saturday, May 31, commission several major infrastructure projects under his administration. These include:
- Section I of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway
- Lekki Deep Sea Port Tax Credit Concrete Road
- The flag-off of Section II of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway
- The 7th Axial Road
He will also virtually inaugurate:
- Kano-Kanwar-Danja-Hadejia Section II Road
- Yakasai-Zalli Road
- Kano Northern By-pass
- Zaria-Hunkuyi-Dabai Section I
