Christian Chukwu’s Burial Date Announced by Family

The family of Nigerian football legend Christian Chukwu has announced a new date for his burial, now scheduled to take place on Saturday, August 16, 2025.
The burial was initially planned for August 22, 2025, in Enugu.
However, the change became necessary due to a scheduling conflict with the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Annual Conference, which will be held in Enugu from August 22 to 28, 2025.
In a statement signed by Emeka Christian Chukwu Jr., the family explained, “We most respectfully wish to inform you of the slight change to the burial of Chairman Christian Chukwu previously scheduled for 22nd August 2025. The new date is now Saturday, 16th August 2025.
This change is necessitated by the clash with the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) conference, being hosted by the Enugu State Government.
Please kindly accept our apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.”
Christian Chukwu, a former captain of the Green Eagles, made 54 appearances for Nigeria, scoring five goals.
He famously led the national team to its first Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title on home soil in 1980.
Chukwu also served as an assistant to coach Clemens Westerhof during Nigeria’s victorious 1994 AFCON campaign in Tunisia and was part of the coaching team that qualified Nigeria for its first FIFA World Cup in 1994.
Additionally, he assisted during the Golden Eaglets’ historic triumph at the inaugural FIFA U-16 World Cup in China in 1985 and led the Super Eagles as head coach to a bronze medal finish at the 2004 AFCON in Tunisia.
