Fallen Cable Electrocutes 3-Year-Old in Anambra

A tragic incident occurred in Awka, Anambra State, where a three-year-old girl was electrocuted by a fallen high-tension cable belonging to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC).
The cable reportedly fell on Friday along Isaiah Morah Close, and despite residents’ efforts to alert the power company, it remained unattended for two days.
Eyewitnesses told journalists that multiple calls were made to EEDC officials, who allegedly demanded a payment of N30,000 to address the issue.
Despite residents meeting the demand, the officials failed to arrive promptly. The cable was only repaired on Sunday, May 24, 2025—after the young girl had already lost her life.
According to a resident identified as Uche, the child was electrocuted when she unknowingly stepped on the live wire while returning from fetching water.
She lived with her mother and others in a partially abandoned building nearby, and often fetched water from neighboring compounds.
“When the other children with her saw what happened, they screamed. Adults rushed out and carefully removed her from the cable before taking her to Awka Medical Centre at Udoka Gate. Unfortunately, she was pronounced dead on arrival,” Uche said.
The incident has sparked outrage among residents, who are demanding accountability from EEDC for the delay in responding to a dangerous hazard that ultimately claimed an innocent life.
