Ronaldo’s Club World Cup Future in Doubt?

Cristiano Ronaldo has sparked speculation about his future with Al-Nassr after posting a cryptic message on social media suggesting his time at the Saudi club may be coming to an end.
The 40-year-old football icon, who joined Al-Nassr in January 2023 on a record-breaking deal reportedly worth £177 million per year, is set to become a free agent when his contract expires next month.
He signed off the season by scoring his 800th club goal in a 3-2 defeat to Al-Fateh, as Al-Nassr finished third in the Saudi Pro League.
Following the match, Ronaldo posted on X (formerly Twitter):
“This chapter is over. The story? Still being written. Grateful to all.”
The message has left fans and pundits wondering if the Portuguese superstar is hinting at a departure or simply closing a chapter in his career.
Possible Club World Cup Appearance?
Ronaldo’s future remains unclear, but one potential short-term opportunity could be the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup in the United States. Al-Nassr failed to qualify for the tournament, but FIFA president Gianni Infantino recently hinted that Ronaldo could still participate—possibly with another team.
Speaking with popular streamer IShowSpeed, Infantino said:
“Ronaldo might play for one of the teams at the Club World Cup. There are discussions ongoing. If any club is watching and wants to sign Ronaldo for the tournament—who knows?”
Could Ronaldo Join a Club Temporarily?
Given his global appeal and commercial value, several clubs might be willing to take Ronaldo on a short-term deal just for the tournament. Brazilian club Botafogo—one of four Brazilian sides participating in the Club World Cup—has been linked as a potential suitor.
When asked about the possibility, Botafogo manager Renato Paiva responded diplomatically:
“Christmas is only in December, but how can you say no to a player like Ronaldo? Even at his age, he’s still a goal machine. In a team that creates plenty of chances, he’d be a great fit.”
Transfer Rules Align for a Short-Term Deal
FIFA has opened a special 10-day transfer window (June 1–10) exclusively for Club World Cup participants to register new players, which could allow Ronaldo to sign with a qualifying team just for the duration of the tournament.
