Why Cunha Wants Man Utd Move & How He Fits In

Matheus Cunha Eyes Man Utd Move to Fulfill Title Ambitions Despite Club’s Struggles
Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha has made it clear: he’s ready for the next step in his career. “I’ve made it clear that I need to take the next step,” he told The Guardian in March. “I want to fight for titles, for big things. I have potential.”
Now, Cunha is reportedly set to join Manchester United from Wolves in a £62.5 million move, even though the Red Devils are coming off their worst Premier League campaign in decades and are without European football.

Despite United finishing a staggering 42 points behind league champions Liverpool, Cunha remains undeterred.
BBC Sport reports that the 26-year-old still sees United as a global football giant and doesn’t consider the move a gamble.
Instead, he’s motivated by the challenge of helping restore one of football’s most iconic clubs to former glory.

The transfer could benefit all sides. Wolves will receive a hefty fee—over £60 million—which they can reinvest, especially as they’ve already shown they can perform without Cunha, having taken 10 points in four matches during his suspension.
Meanwhile, United desperately need fresh attacking options as they prepare for the possible exits of Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho.
Under incoming manager Ruben Amorim, the club is aiming to rebuild after a dismal goal return of just 44 Premier League goals in 2024–25, their lowest in the competition’s history.
Cunha brings proven Premier League experience, having netted 27 goals in 65 appearances for Wolves. His creativity, flair, and sharp finishing were central to Wolves’ attack.
He even matched the Premier League record for most goals in a season by a Brazilian, equaling Roberto Firmino and Gabriel Martinelli.
His underlying stats—like six goals from outside the box and 51 shots on target—mirror those of United playmaker Bruno Fernandes.
Yet, Cunha’s temperament has raised eyebrows. He’s had multiple disciplinary issues this season, including a red card for a violent outburst against Bournemouth and a ban for confronting a staff member at Ipswich.
These incidents may have cooled interest from Champions League clubs like Arsenal, who reportedly passed on him in January.
Some believe United and a potential move to Saudi Arabia were Cunha’s only realistic options this summer. Still, football pundits remain divided on how much his temperament should matter.
While some argue his behavior is a red flag, others—like Premier League winner Chris Sutton—compare him to the fiery but brilliant Wayne Rooney.
Former England international Fara Williams believes Cunha’s outbursts were due to frustration at carrying Wolves through tough seasons.
“Cunha would bring a big boost to United,” Williams said. “If they add more quality players around him, I think you’ll see that frustration fade. I really like him as a player and believe he would be a huge asset for Ruben Amorim.”
Whether he thrives at Old Trafford or struggles under the weight of expectations, one thing is certain: Matheus Cunha is betting big on himself—and on Manchester United.
