Human Rights Lawyer Inibehe Effiong Draws Criticism for Remarks on Police Officer’s Death

Inibehe Effiong Criticizes Late Police Officer, CSP Ekene Nwosu, in Controversial Social Media Post
Prominent human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, sparked widespread controversy on May 31 after taking to social media to publicly condemn the legacy of late police officer CSP Ekene Nwosu, who once headed the Anti-Robbery Squad at the Akwa Ibom State Police Command.
In a strongly worded statement, Effiong claimed that many residents of Akwa Ibom were “celebrating” Nwosu’s death, citing alleged abuses and human rights violations carried out under his watch.
Describing Nwosu as a “murderous and rogue police officer,” Effiong accused him of repeatedly violating citizens’ rights and showing blatant disregard for the rule of law, lawyers, and the judiciary.
According to Effiong, courts had ruled against Nwosu in several rights violation cases, including some handled by his own law firm in Uyo.
He further alleged that despite multiple complaints, Nwosu remained in service due to political protection and was used by powerful figures to target opponents.
Effiong also claimed that Nwosu once celebrated the death of a former Commissioner of Police who had eventually facilitated his transfer out of Akwa Ibom to Ekiti State — where he reportedly died.
While acknowledging that death is inevitable, Effiong asserted that public reaction to Nwosu’s passing reflects the pain and trauma he allegedly inflicted on others during his tenure.
His remarks have sparked mixed reactions online, with some supporting his call for accountability in law enforcement, while others criticized the tone of his message as insensitive.
