2027: APC Governors Rally Against Tinubu, Ganduje’s Automatic Ticket Plan

Sources speaking to Leadership reveal that two governors—one from the South East and another from the South West—are leading efforts to block the proposed automatic ticket arrangement for lawmakers in their states.
The contentious issue is expected to be raised with APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, soon after the Sallah holidays in Abuja.
Divisions Among APC Governors
The governors appear split over the plan. Some are cautious about openly opposing it due to President Tinubu’s backing, while others remain outspokenly against it.
Senator Hope Uzodimma, Imo State governor and chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, through his Chief Press Secretary Hon. Oguwike Nwachuku, affirmed Uzodimma’s loyalty to the party and willingness to follow whatever decision the APC makes regarding automatic tickets.
However, this statement represents only Uzodimma’s stance, not necessarily that of all APC governors.
Ganduje Supports Automatic Tickets for “Performing” Legislators
Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, addressing party leaders from the North Central zone during their endorsement of President Tinubu for a second term, advocated for the continuation of legislative support via automatic tickets.
He emphasized the importance of institutional memory in the National Assembly and questioned the high turnover rate of lawmakers every four years.
Ganduje suggested that if legal means to grant automatic tickets are unavailable, advocacy within the party and National Assembly leadership should be pursued to allow effective legislators to return.
Rift Widens as Some Governors Support President’s Plan
An insider within the Progressive Governors Forum revealed that not all South West governors oppose the automatic ticket proposal.
Two South West governors have reportedly expressed support, urging their colleagues to avoid challenging the President’s strategic decision.
The move to grant automatic tickets is seen as a way to strengthen President Tinubu’s influence within the APC and to minimize internal disputes or lawsuits that might arise during the party’s primaries.
It also aims to preserve legislative experience and promote continuity in governance.
Opposition from Within and Threats to Back Rivals
Despite this, resistance persists. In Ondo State, an APC chieftain and a former Niger Delta agitator have threatened to back opposition candidates if automatic tickets are forced on their federal lawmakers.
Over the weekend, the party leader reportedly vowed to sponsor rivals against sitting lawmakers if the plan proceeds.
Ex-Minister Hassan Abdullahi Quits APC Amid Tensions
Adding to the unrest, Barrister Mohammed Hassan Abdullahi, former Minister of Environment under President Buhari and ex-Secretary to the State Government of Nasarawa State, resigned from the APC citing personal reasons.
Abdullahi submitted his resignation letter to the APC chairman of his ward in Karu Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, also sending copies to other party leaders.
In his letter, he wished the party well and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve.
