Kano Govt Announces Extended Eid Holiday for Schools

Kano Government Grants Mid-Term Break for Eid-el-Kabir Celebration
The Kano State Government has announced a special mid-term break for students in celebration of the upcoming Eid-el-Kabir festival.
According to an official release from the Ministry of Education, all primary and secondary schools—both public and private—will observe an extended holiday beginning Wednesday, June 4, 2025.
The announcement, signed by the Ministry’s Director of Public Enlightenment, Balarabe Abdullahi Kiru, states that the holiday will last until Sunday, June 15 for boarding students, who are expected to return to school by the evening of that date.
Day students, on the other hand, are to resume on Monday, June 16, 2025.
“Parents and guardians of students in boarding schools are requested to pick up their children by the early hours of Wednesday, June 4,” the statement read.
The Ministry further clarified that this temporary closure would not affect the remainder of the 2024/2025 academic calendar, including any scheduled public holidays or term activities.
Kano State’s Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ali Haruna Makoda, expressed gratitude to parents for their continuous cooperation and urged them to ensure students return promptly after the Sallah break.
“I appreciate the unwavering support from the people of Kano and wish our students a joyful and safe Eid-el-Kabir celebration,” he said.
This decision follows a trend observed earlier in March 2025, when the governments of Katsina, Kebbi, and Bauchi states issued similar mid-term breaks for Ramadan, prompting national debate over school disruptions in the northern region.
Kano’s recent move may rekindle that conversation as stakeholders weigh the impact of religious observances on academic continuity.
