Orji Kalu: I’ve Gained Nothing from Politics

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has claimed that he has not gained personally from his political career, stating instead that his involvement in politics has cost him significant personal wealth.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Monday, June 2, the former governor of Abia State and current senator representing Abia North said he has always relied on his private businesses to fund both his political activities and public service roles.
“I’ve never benefited anything from politics,” Kalu said. “In fact, I’ve spent my own money being a governor, just as I’ve spent my money as a senator. I literally financed the state when I was governor.
That’s the truth. I lost a lot of money, and the Federal Government even seized some of my businesses.”
Kalu, who governed Abia State from 1999 to 2007, emphasized that he was already a successful businessman before venturing into politics.
He explained that he made his fortune early in life through various ventures, including the importation of rice, sugar, and confectionaries, and the sale of petroleum products.
“I made so much money before I turned 24. When the PDP was being formed in 1998, I provided much of the funding,” he said.
“Ask anyone who was there at the time. I gave over $1 million to support President Obasanjo’s campaign and $500 million to the party itself.
At that time, only a few people like TY Danjuma and Atiku Abubakar had the means to contribute significantly.”
Kalu said he continues to invest in businesses across Nigeria to create employment and drive economic growth, underscoring that his political involvement has been more about service than personal gain.
He also described politics as a risky venture that has done more harm than good to his wealth and enterprises.
